Located Around 112 Kms From Siliguri At An Altitude Between 1200 To 3200 Feet Above Sea Level Bordered By Two Villages Sumbuk And Kitam. This Sanctuary Is Covered With Thick Moderate Plants Of Shrub Land, Sal And Pine Forests. This Sanctuary Is Home To More Than 200 Species Of Birds And Butterflies. The Beautiful Sumbuk Village With Its Gladiolas Fields, Ancient Temples, The Emerald Green Rangit River And The Wilderness Of This Place Make Kitam One Of The Best Locations In The Lower Altitudes Of Sikkim.
The Habitants Of This Bird Sanctuary Are Rufous-Necked Hornbill, Grey-Crowned Prinia, Rufous-Throated Wren-Babbler, Yellow-Vented Warbler, Wedge-Billed Wren-Babbler And Many More.
From The Month Of October Every Year Migratory Birds Start Visiting This Sanctuary. Peacocks Roaming Freely Is A Very Common Sight Here. Located Between Namchi And Melli, Kitam This Sanctuary Possesses Some View Points And Watch Towers For Bird Viewing. However, To View Birds One Has To Walk Through The Stone Paths Inside The Sanctuary Going Along The River Banks And Mountains.
The Guided Bird Watching Trips In This Sanctuary Begins At Around 5:30 Am And It Takes Around 4 Hrs. 4 Different Bird Watching Trails Are There In This Sanctuary. The Habitants Of This Sanctuary Are Chestnut-Breasted Partridge, White-Rumped Vulture, Slender-Billed Babbler, Slender-Billed Vulture, Ward’s Trogon, Rufous-Necked Hornbill, Rusty-Bellied Shortwing, White-Naped Yuhina, Rufous-Throated Wren-Babbler, Black-Breasted Parrotbill, Beautiful Nuthatch, Grey-Crowned Prinia, Yellow-Vented Warbler, Wedge-Billed Wren-Babbler Etc. These Birds Can Be Seen Regularly. Adventure Lovers Can Also Enjoy Angling And Rafting In River Rangit.
One Of The Highest Points Of This Bird Sanctuary Is The Tumbol Schor A Small Forested Area, From Where Tourist Can Get A Great Panoramic View Of The Surrounding Mountains. A Gigantic 100 Year Old Litchi Tree Can Also Be Seen Here.
Apart From The Bird Sanctuary Kitam Has Other Attractions Like The Alley Khet, Which Is A Paddock With Some Great Views Of The Hills And Rivers, Few Ancient Temples, Pipal Trees, Decaying Stupas And A Monastery.
